The State of Islamic Studies in American Universities

This book provides documents of Islamic studies in American Universities. Over the previous couple of decades the us has seen significant growth within the study of Islam and Islamic societies in institutions of upper learning fueled primarily by events including economic relations of the U.S. with Muslim countries, migration of Muslims into the country, conversion of USA citizens to Islam, U.S. interests in Arab oil resources, involvement of Muslims within the American public square, and such tragic events of Nine Eleven. Although there’s increasing recognition that the study of Islam and therefore the role of Muslims is strategically essential during a climate of worldwide integration, multiculturalism, and political turmoil, nevertheless, the state of Islamic Studies in America is not so satisfactory. The difficulty must be addressed, particularly because the need for intelligent debate and understanding is continuously stifled by what some have termed an Islamic industry run primarily by think factory pundits, and cut-and-paste experts.
